Explore natural remedies and traditional herbs that have been time-tested to provide relief from menstrual cramps, regulate menstrual cycles, and promote overall well-being. Embrace the wisdom of Ayurveda in managing menstrual discomfort for a balanced and harmonious approach to women’s health.

Many women in their 20s often experience lower abdominal pain and cramps during their menstrual cycle, a condition called Dysmenorrhea. This discomfort can come with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and headaches.

Ayurveda, an ancient healing system, offers natural and holistic solutions to address these menstrual challenges. Ayurveda focuses on bringing balance to the mind, body, and soul. Drawing from ancient Sanskrit texts, Ayurveda provides a comprehensive approach to well-being.

In addition to using herbal remedies, Ayurveda suggests specific foods and exercises to manage health issues. Certain foods are recommended or discouraged to ensure the body gets the nutrients it needs. Ayurveda also encourages specific yoga poses and breathing exercises (pranayama) to improve blood circulation and oxygen levels in the blood. This holistic approach aims to enhance overall health and relieve menstrual discomfort.

Ayurvedic prespective of Period pain

According to Ayurveda, the downward flow of Apana Vayu is responsible for cleaning the uterine lining during menstruation, considering periods as related to Vatta. If there’s too much Vatta in the body, it can cause symptoms like anxiety, fear, muscle pain, difficulty concentrating, feeling cold, fatigue, and constipation.

Ayurveda suggests that the best way to ensure healthy and pain-free menstrual cycles is to adopt a lifestyle and use medicines that reduce Vatta. Also, taking enough rest and limiting physical activity can ease stress on the body, preventing complications during the menstrual cycle. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of sleep in letting the body rejuvenate, with natural cycles helping in relaxation and healing processes.

Symptoms of Painful Periods

•        Pain in the lower abdomen that may spread to the lower back and legs.

•        The pain can feel like a strong grip, a constant ache, or a combination of both.

•        Pain starts with the beginning of the period or even before.

•        The first 24 hours are usually the most painful.

•        Passing clots in the menstrual blood often provides relief from pain.

Dysmenorrhoea can also come with:

•        Nausea and vomiting

•        Headache

•        Digestive issues

•        Fainting

•        Premenstrual symptoms like tender breasts

Types of Periods Pain

1.      Primary

2.      Secondary

Causes of Primary Dysmenorrhea:

Normal painful periods are known as primary dysmenorrhoea. It happens because the muscles in the uterus contract harder than usual to get rid of the thickened lining (endometrium). These contractions may also reduce blood flow to the uterus, making the pain worse. The hormone-like compounds causing these contractions are prostaglandins. The reason for increased prostaglandins is not known. This type of dysmenorrhoea usually lessens with age and is often seen in adolescents due to a low pain threshold, tension, and anxiety.

Causes of Secondary Dysmenorrhoea:

2.      Adenomyosis

3.      Pelvic inflammatory diseases

4.      Ovarian cysts

5.      Fibroids in the uterus

Shatavari, known as a “woman-friendly” herb in Ayurveda, helps restore hormonal balance and regulate menstrual cycles. It also effectively reduces menstrual cramps. Take ¼ – ½ tsp of Maharishi Ayurveda Shatavar Churna twice a day with milk or lukewarm water.

Maharishi Ayurveda Restone:

This potent Ayurvedic remedy combines Ashoka, Shatavari, Peepal, Safed Chandan, and other herbs to alleviate menstrual cramps. Available in syrup and tablet forms, it helps regulate menstrual flow. Take 1-2 Restone tablets after meals or 1-2 tsp of Restone syrup daily after meals, directly or mixed with water.

Ginger:

Ginger’s warming and pain-relieving properties protect against inflammation, making it highly recommended for managing menstrual cramps. Include it in your diet or make ginger tea by boiling raw ginger or ginger powder in 2 cups of water. Drink it at least twice a day.

Sesame Oil:

Warm sesame oil effectively relieves period cramps and can be used for self-massage. Take 1 tsp of sesame oil and massage the lower abdomen, stroking downward for optimal results.

Bhutakesi (Corydalis govaniana)

Belonging to the bleeding-heart family, Bhutakesi is found in the Himalayan region, especially in Kashmir. It’s often suggested for easing menstrual cramps. To use it, mix 1 to 2 grams of the powder in a cup of boiling water, strain it, add honey, and drink it twice a day.

Kachur (Curcuma zedoaria)

Known as an ’emmenagogue,’ Kachur is really helpful for relieving menstrual cramps. Consume 1 to 3 grams of the herb with lukewarm water, or take capsules of 300 to 450 mg. You can also make a root infusion by boiling a quarter-inch piece of the root in 50 ml water until it reduces by half.

Methi seeds (Fenugreek)

Another common kitchen herb with a proven record in easing menstrual pain is Methi. Soak a teaspoon of Methi in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, consume it with the seeds if possible, or strain them out. Optionally, add a small pinch of black salt.

Gud (Jaggery)

Jaggery is an excellent Vata pacifier. Replace sugar with jaggery at least 3 to 5 days before your expected menstrual cycle. Combine Methi-Ajwain and Gud by making small M&M-sized balls with these three ingredients. Take 2-3 of these on an empty stomach with a sip of warm water.

Ghritkumari

(Aloe Vera) Aloe is a helpful friend for women, providing relief from menstrual cramps among its many health benefits. Drink a glass of aloe vera juice on an empty stomach every morning for noticeable health improvements. If daily intake is challenging, start 3 to 5 days before cramps begin and continue throughout your menstrual period.

Shilajit

Shilajit is known for its ability to address irregular menstrual cycles, which can negatively impact female fertility. Whether taken in powder form or capsules, Shilajit helps regulate menstrual cycles and ease period pain. It enhances oxygen flow and nutrient delivery to the reproductive system, supporting detoxification and providing relief from cramps. Studies suggest that incorporating turmeric into meals or consuming it with milk can provide additional relief from uterine contractions during menstruation.

Holistic Healing for Menstrual Pain in Ayurveda

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, focuses on balancing the body, mind, and spirit. When it comes to dealing with irregular periods and discomfort, Ayurvedic approaches aim to restore this balance.

1.      Dietary Adjustments: Making simple changes to your diet, like increasing fiber and staying hydrated, can help with cramping and bloating. Avoiding foods high in salt, sugar, and fat helps balance hormones, reducing period pain.

2.      Herbal Supplements and Massages: Ayurvedic remedies include herbal supplements such as ginger, turmeric, and fenugreek to ease pain. Massages using warm oils can also relax muscles, providing relief.

3.      Herbs for Irregular Periods: Ayurveda uses herbs like Ashoka, Lodhra, Shatavari, Cinnamon, and Guggulu to address irregular periods. These herbs can be taken as capsules, tablets, or teas.

4.      Dietary Modifications: Limiting caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods can reduce inflammation and pain. Regular 30-minute exercise, meditation for stress management, and massages contribute to overall well-being.

5.      Hydration and Herbal Teas: Staying hydrated by drinking enough water aids toxin elimination and supports bodily functions. Herbal teas are also beneficial in relieving menstrual pain.

6.      Ahara for Rajawsala Charya:

During menstruation, it’s important to follow Rajawsala Charya, and diet (Ahara) plays a crucial role. Include fruits, mishri, barley, and Shashtika rice in your diet. Avoid spicy, fried, sour, and heavy foods to balance doshas and ease cramps.

7.      Abdominal Massage and Hot Bag:

Gently massage your lower abdomen and follow it with a hot bag massage to relieve pain during menstruation.

8.      Ajwain Tea:

Boil 1/4 teaspoon of ajwain in 2 cups of water until it reduces to 1/4. Drinking this tea helps reduce period pain.

9.      Jeera Coriander Coffee:

Fry and powder equal parts of jeera and coriander. Boil 1/4 teaspoon of the mixture in 1/2 cup of water, add jaggery and 1/4 cup of milk to make a coffee that eases period cramps.

10.    Red Hibiscus Flower Tea:

Boil red hibiscus flower petals in water to make a tea. Drinking this tea daily can help prevent period cramps.

11.    Fresh Ginger Tea:

Consume fresh ginger tea once or twice a day to alleviate menstrual discomfort.

While the menstrual cycle is a natural part of women’s lives, it can be challenging. Embracing Ayurvedic remedies empowers individuals to take control and find relief, fostering a positive outlook on this natural process.
