Ayurvedic Medicine for Sinusitis

Ayurvedic Medicine for Sinusitis

When you have a cold, it usually gets better quite quickly. You might have a runny nose and a sore throat for 2 to 3 days, then your nose might feel stuffy before you start feeling better. On the other hand, sinus infections last longer, with symptoms sticking around for over a week and sometimes getting worse instead of better.

Sinus infections can go away by themselves, and antibiotics don’t work if the infection is caused by a virus or something in the air, like secondhand smoke. But there are things you can do to help yourself get better faster.

Having a cold can make you feel really unwell. You might have a sore throat, a blocked nose, and a cough that makes it hard to do your everyday activities. It can even affect your sleep, making it difficult to rest comfortably. These symptoms can last for a long time, especially during different seasons. Sinusitis is a condition where the spaces in your skull (sinuses) get swollen. These sinuses usually have a job to keep your nose moist and clean, but when you have a cold or allergies, they can get blocked with mucus. This makes sinusitis happen, and it can make your symptoms last for more than a week, sometimes getting worse instead of better.

WHAT IS SINUSITIS?

Sinusitis is a condition where the sinuses, which are small air-filled spaces in the face, become inflamed or swollen. It affects many people every year and is one of the most common reasons why people see doctors and get prescribed antibiotics. Usually, it involves more than one sinus, with the main one affected being the maxillary sinus, followed by the ethmoid, frontal, and sphenoid sinuses.

Sinusitis can happen to anyone, regardless of their age or gender. Normally, the sinuses produce mucus that goes into the nose. But when there’s a blockage in the sinuses or a problem with the cilia (tiny hairs that move mucus), the mucus can’t flow properly, leading to symptoms like facial pressure, pain, nasal congestion, and other related issues. The trapped mucus also makes a person more likely to get viral, bacterial, or fungal infections.

Ayurvedic view of Sinusitis

A sinus infection happens when there is an imbalance in two things called Prana Vata and Vata, according to Ayurvedic ideas. This imbalance not only messes up the balance of these things but also makes the immune system weaker, making a person more likely to get sick.

Sinusitis is a condition that affects the sinuses, which are hollow spaces connecting to the nose. These sinuses are spread throughout the face and include the maxillary sinuses (in the cheekbones), frontal sinuses (on the forehead), ethmoid sinuses (between the ears), and sphenoid sinuses (behind the nose). When these sinuses get inflamed, they get bigger and fill with fluid, making it easier for infections to happen.

Important of Nasal Health

Taking care of your nose is very important for your overall well-being. The nose is not just for breathing; it is also a gateway for a vital life force called “prana vaha srotas.” Besides helping with breathing, the nostrils also have a significant role in the energy pathways of the moon (ida) and solar channels (pingala).

This connection between the nose and energy pathways emphasizes the importance of taking care of your respiratory system through nasal care. Simple activities like doing breathing exercises or using herbal oils in the nose can have positive effects on your entire body. It’s important to understand that maintaining nasal health goes beyond just thinking about breathing; it has various benefits for your overall health and well-being.

Type Of Sinusitis

There are different types of sinusitis, which is when the sinuses, the spaces in our face around the nose, get infected. Here are the four main types:

Acute Sinusitis:

This type is usually caused by viruses like the ones that cause the common cold. It goes away on its own in about a week, and symptoms include a blocked nose, nasal discharge, mild fever, and facial pain.

Subacute Sinusitis:

[/vc_column][/vc_row]

Lasting more than four weeks but less than 12 weeks, this type shows symptoms like headaches, sore throat, nasal congestion, and facial pain. It can make daily activities difficult.

Chronic Sinusitis:

This type lasts for over 12 weeks and can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or other factors like allergies, nasal polyps, or a deviated nasal septum. Symptoms include colored nasal discharge, nasal blockage, facial or dental pain, and a decreased sense of smell for more than three months.

Recurrent Sinusitis:

People with this type have four or more sinus infections per year, each lasting at least ten days with symptom-free intervals in between. The causes are similar to other types, and individuals have normal breathing between episodes.

Reasons of Sinusitis

Sinusitis is when your sinuses get inflamed, and it often happens after you catch a cold or have allergies. There are different things that can trigger sinusitis:

Pathogens:

These are tiny things like viruses, bacteria, or fungi that can cause your nasal membranes to swell up, blocking them and leading to an infection.

Common colds and allergies:

When you have a cold or allergies, your body may produce too much mucus or block the openings of your sinuses, making sinusitis more likely.

Nasal abnormalities:

Sometimes, things like nasal polyps, a deviated nasal septum, or bone spurs in your nose can block your sinuses from working properly.

Swimming in contaminated water:

If you swim in water that has harmful germs, they can get into your nose and cause a sinus infection.

Dental infections:

Infections from your teeth can spread to your sinuses and cause sinusitis.

Trauma to the sinus:

If you have an injury that damages your sinuses, it can lead to inflammation and infection.

Repeated exposure to extreme weather:

Being in harsh weather for a long time can make your sinuses not work as well, making you more likely to get infections.

Repeated respiratory infections:

Getting sick often can weaken your immune system, making you more prone to sinusitis.

Impaired immune system:

If your immune system isn’t working well, you’re at a higher risk of getting sinus infections.

Exposure to cigarette smoke:

Breathing in smoke from cigarettes can irritate your nose and make it easier for sinus infections to happen.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a condition where the sinuses, which are air-filled spaces in the face, get infected. It can cause various symptoms, and here’s a simple explanation of those:

Nasal Congestion:

Your nose may feel blocked, making it hard to breathe.

Runny Nose:

You might have thick, yellow, or green mucus coming out of your nose.

Feverish Sensation:

You may feel like your body temperature is higher than normal.

Headache:

You might have a constant discomfort in your head.

Facial Pain or Pressure:

You may feel unpleasant sensations around your nose, eyes, and forehead.

Nighttime Cough: You could have a persistent cough, especially during the night.

Fatigue and Malaise:

You may feel tired and generally uncomfortable.

Decreased Sense of Smell: Your ability to smell things might be reduced.

Pain in Ears, Teeth, and Jaw:

You might feel discomfort in these areas of your face.

Halitosis:

Your breath might not smell pleasant, or you could have a bad taste in your mouth.

Post Nasal Drip:

Mucus from your nose might drip down to your throat.

It’s important to know that sinusitis itself is not something you can catch from someone else. However, the bacteria and viruses that cause sinusitis can be contagious. To avoid getting infected, it’s crucial to practice good cleanliness and hygiene.
