There are many reasons people get pneumonia and other respiratory diseases, like unhealthy eating, being overweight, smoking, or being around pollution. Sometimes, we forget to focus on staying healthy because we’re too busy. Unfortunately, India has a lot of air pollution, but many people don’t take it seriously. We might think we’re immune to pollution, but we’re not. Smoking, drugs, and even being around smokers can make things worse for our immune system.

What id Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a lung infection that causes inflammation in the tiny air sacs of the lungs. These sacs can become filled with fluid or pus, leading to symptoms like coughing up phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. It can be caused by various organisms such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Pneumonia can range from mild to severe, posing a particularly grave risk to infants, young children, older adults over 65, and individuals with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Pneumonia

In Ayurveda, pneumonia is called shwasanaka jwara, meaning fever. The main signs are chest pain, a cough with thick phlegm, and a high temperature. Breathing trouble is shown by heavy breathing and flared nostrils. The pulse feels quick, heavy, and soft. Other symptoms include weakness, confusion, forehead sweating, and a bad taste in the mouth. 1.         Chest Pain: It hurts when you breathe or cough.

2.         Confusion: Older adults, aged 65 and above, might feel confused or less aware mentally.

3.         Cough: You might cough and sometimes bring up mucus.

4.         Feeling Tired: You may feel very tired and weak.

5.         Fever: Your body might get hot with sweating and shivering.

6.         Low Body Temperature: Some older adults and people with weak immune systems might have a body temperature lower than normal.

7.         Stomach Issues: You might feel nauseous, vomit, or have diarrhea.

8.         Difficulty Breathing: It becomes hard to catch your breath.

9.         Newborns and Infants: Babies might not show any signs of being sick, or they might vomit, have a fever, cough, seem restless, tired, or have trouble breathing and eating.

Cause Factors of Pneumonia

Things that can cause pneumonia:

1.         Drinking a lot of cold drinks, eating food with little heat, or living in cold places.

2.         Doing too much exercise, having sex often, or taking long walks.

4.         Eating too much or too little, or eating before or after meals.

5.         Fasting too much.

6.         Eating foods that don’t go well together, like milk and seafood.

7.         Eating certain foods often, like pigeon peas, black gram, or using a lot of sesame oil.

8.         Eating foods that make you produce a lot of gas.

9.         Feeling a burning sensation in your stomach after eating.

10.       Eating bird, marsh, or aquatic meats.

11.       Eating too much yogurt.

12.       Being around smoke, wind, or dust.

13.       Getting sick from flu, cold, or RSV viruses.

14.       Getting infected by bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae or Mycoplasma pneumonia.

Cause of Pneumonia

Pneumonia happens when germs like bacteria and viruses infect your lungs. Normally, your body stops these germs, but sometimes they can overpower your immune system. There are different types of pneumonia:

1.         Community-acquired pneumonia: This is the most common type and happens outside of hospitals. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Bacterial pneumonia is often from Streptococcus pneumoniae or similar bacteria. Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes a milder form called walking pneumonia. Fungal pneumonia is more common in people with health problems or weak immune systems. Viruses, including COVID-19, can also cause community-acquired pneumonia.

2.         Hospital-acquired pneumonia: Some people get pneumonia while staying in hospitals. This type can be serious because the bacteria may be resistant to antibiotics, and patients are already sick. Those on ventilators in intensive care units are at higher risk.

3.         Health care-acquired pneumonia: This happens in long-term care facilities or outpatient clinics. It’s similar to hospital-acquired pneumonia and can also be caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

4.         Aspiration pneumonia: This occurs when you breathe in food, drink, vomit, or saliva into your lungs. It’s more likely if something affects your gag reflex, like a brain injury or drinking too much alcohol or using drugs.

Prevention of Pneumonia in New born babies

It’s better to stop sickness before it starts. Ayurveda says it’s important to keep babies’ immune systems strong to avoid infections. Here are some simple ways to do that:

1.         Breastfeeding: Breast milk gives babies important things to fight infections. It helps their immune system and protects them from sickness like pneumonia.

2.         Ayurvedic Immunization: Ayurveda says keeping the immune system strong is key to avoiding and dealing with infections. Things like breastfeeding, Ayurvedic immunization (Swarna Prashana), and using special herbs can help babies fight off infections.
