Ayurvedic Medicine for Bronchiolitis

Ayurvedic Medicine for Bronchiolitis

Ayurvedic medicine for bronchiolitis encompasses a holistic approach rooted in ancient Indian healing traditions. Drawing from a rich herbal repertoire, Ayurvedic remedies focus on restoring balance within the body to alleviate respiratory distress. Herbal formulations such as honey, Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Mustard Oil, Garlic, Tulsi (Holy Basil), Thyme, Ginger, and Eucalyptus are employed for their potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and expectorant properties, targeting the underlying causes of bronchiolitis. These natural remedies, steeped in centuries of wisdom, offer a gentle yet effective alternative for soothing inflamed lungs, reducing mucus buildup, and promoting respiratory comfort, embodying the principles of holistic wellness inherent in Ayurvedic philosophy.

Bronchiolitis is the most common lung infection in babies under one year old. It affects one in five infants, and 2-3% of these cases need hospital care. This illness is a sudden swelling of the airways, usually caused by a virus, with RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus) being the most common. Symptoms include infection and blockage of the lower airways. Most babies recover in a week, but those with existing heart or lung issues may become very sick and have lasting effects.

In Ayurveda, Bronchiolitis is similar to a condition called Swasa roga. This traditional medicine system links respiratory diseases to an imbalance of Vata dosha and problems with Kapha dosha and the cardio-respiratory system (Pranavaha srotas).

What is Bronchiolitis?

[/vc_column][/vc_row]

Bronchiolitis is a common lung infection in babies and young kids. It makes the small airways in the lungs swollen and irritated, causing mucus buildup. These small airways are called bronchioles. A virus usually causes bronchiolitis.

At first, bronchiolitis seems like a common cold. But it gets worse, leading to coughing and a wheezing sound when breathing out. Sometimes kids have trouble breathing. The symptoms usually last for 1 to 2 weeks but can sometimes last longer.

Symptoms of Bronchiolitis

t first, bronchiolitis looks like a common cold:

•           Runny nose

•           Stuffy nose

•           Cough

•           Sometimes a slight fever

After a few days, your child might have trouble breathing, which can include wheezing. Many babies with bronchiolitis also get an ear infection called otitis media.

Causes of Bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis happens when a virus infects the smallest airways in the lungs, making them swollen and irritated. Mucus builds up, making it hard to breathe.

The main cause is the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which most children catch by age 2. RSV spreads more in colder months or during rainy seasons. People can catch RSV more than once. Other viruses, like those causing the flu or cold, can also lead to bronchiolitis.

These viruses spread easily through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. You can also get them by touching things like dishes, doorknobs, or toys and then touching your face.

Who Is at Risk?

•           Mostly affects children under 2 years old.

•           Highest risk in infants under 3 months old.

•           Rare in adults.

Risk Factors

•           Being born prematurely.

•           Having heart or lung conditions.

•           Having a weak immune system.

•           Exposure to tobacco smoke.

•           Being in child care or crowded places.

•           Having siblings who attend school or daycare.

Complications

•           Low oxygen levels.

•           Pauses in breathing, especially in preemies and infants under 2 months.

•           Dehydration from not drinking enough.

•           Respiratory failure, which may need hospital care and breathing support.

Home Remedies for Bronchiolitis

Using home remedies along with Ayurvedic medicines can help reduce symptoms and cure bronchiolitis. Here are some simple and effective remedies for people of all ages:

1.         Dry Ginger, Black Pepper, and Long Pepper: These spices have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce swelling in the bronchial tubes and ease nasal congestion. Use them in powdered form to help with bronchiolitis.

2.         Giloy Juice: Giloy, also known as Guduchi or Tinospora Cordifolia, is an Ayurvedic herb that soothes the throat and reduces inflammation. Drink one glass of Giloy juice daily to clear the airways.

3.         Turmeric: Known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, turmeric can boost immunity and prevent infections. Regularly consuming turmeric can help with bronchiolitis symptoms.

4.         Honey: Honey has been used for a long time to help with breathing problems. Mixing 2 teaspoons of honey in warm water and drinking it once a day can help clear mucus from your lungs.

5.         Amla (Indian Gooseberry): Amla has compounds that fight allergies and infections. Drinking a mix of crushed amla fruit juice and cinnamon powder in warm water once a day can help fight lung infections and ease bronchitis symptoms.

6.         Mustard Oil: Mustard oil can soothe inflamed lungs. Mixing 2 tablespoons of mustard oil with a pinch of camphor and massaging it gently on your chest can help release trapped mucus and improve breathing.

7.         Garlic: Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with bronchitis. Adding minced garlic to boiled milk and drinking it once a day can be a good herbal remedy for bronchitis.

8.         Tulsi (Holy Basil): Tulsi has cooling and antimicrobial properties that can help with lung conditions. Boiling tulsi leaves in water, making a tea, and drinking it in the evening can help with coughing and headaches caused by bronchitis.

9.         Thyme: Thyme has compounds that fight infections and ease coughs. Inhaling steam with thyme or drinking thyme tea can act as a natural expectorant, easing inflammation and helping with bronchitis.

10.       Ginger: Ginger reduces inflammation and helps with mucus elimination. Drinking ginger tea or mixing it with honey can provide relief from bronchitis symptoms by soothing irritated airways.

11.       Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus clears mucus and opens airways. Inhaling steam with eucalyptus or using it in a vapor form can ease bronchitis symptoms by reducing inflammation and making breathing easier.

Prevention of Bronchiolitis

Ways to Prevent Infection:

1.         Wash Hands Frequently: Wash your hands often, especially before touching your baby, if you have a cold, flu, or other illness. If you’re sick, wear a face mask.

2.         Keep Sick Children at Home: If your child has bronchiolitis, keep them at home to prevent spreading it to others.

3.         Avoid Sick People: Limit contact with people who have a fever or cold, especially for newborns and premature babies, during their first two months.

4.         Clean Surfaces: Disinfect commonly touched surfaces like toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.

5.         Regular Hand Washing: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap isn’t available.

6.         Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue or your elbow to cover coughs and sneezes. Dispose of tissues and wash hands immediately.

7.         Use Personal Drinking Glass: Don’t share drinking glasses, especially if someone in the family is sick.

8.         Breastfeed If Possible: Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of respiratory infections in babies.

Immunizations and Medicines:

1.         RSV Immunization:

•           Nirsevimab (Beyfortus): A single-dose shot given before or during RSV season (typically November to March in the U.S.). It’s for babies under 8 months and those 8-19 months old at high risk of severe RSV.

•           Palivizumab: An alternative if nirsevimab is not available, requiring monthly shots during the RSV season.

2.         Vaccine for Pregnant People: The RSV vaccine Abrysvo is approved for pregnant people to protect infants from birth to 6 months. It’s given as a single shot between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy, typically from September to January in the U.S.

These measures can help protect your child from bronchiolitis and severe RSV infections.

Diet and Care in Bronchiolitis

Do’s (Pathya) in Bronchiolitis

•           Handwashing: Wash your hands often with soap and water for 15 to 30 seconds, especially before touching a baby.

•           Vaccination: Everyone over six months old should get a yearly flu shot, especially those living with kids under five.

•           Cleanliness: Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces you touch a lot.

•           Cough and Sneeze Hygiene: Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue away and wash your hands.

•           Stay Home When Sick: Don’t go out if you are feeling ill.

•           Foods: Eat wheat, old rice, green gram, horse gram, barley, and snake gourd.

•           Spices: Use garlic, turmeric, ginger, and black pepper.

Don’ts (Apathya) in Bronchiolitis

•           No Smoking: Do not smoke in the home as it increases the risk of respiratory illness in children.

•           Avoid Sick People: Stay away from adults and children with colds or upper respiratory infections.

•           Hand Hygiene: Don’t touch your face, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

•           Avoid Close Contact: If you or someone else is sick, avoid close contact like kissing, shaking hands, and sharing cups or utensils.

In conclusion, Ayurvedic medicine offers a wealth of natural remedies for managing bronchiolitis effectively. Drawing from centuries-old traditional practices and the healing properties of herbs and natural substances, Ayurveda provides holistic approaches to alleviate symptoms, reduce inflammation, and promote respiratory health. From the soothing qualities of honey and garlic to the antimicrobial benefits of amla and tulsi, each remedy offers unique therapeutic properties that complement conventional treatments. Incorporating these Ayurvedic remedies into bronchiolitis management can offer patients additional support and relief, emphasizing the importance of holistic approaches in respiratory care.
