Ayurvedic Medicine for ChickenPox

Ayurvedic Medicine for ChickenPox

Chickenpox is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It spreads through the air or by touching someone who has it. It mostly affects children under 10 years old but can also occur in adults. Chickenpox causes itchy blisters all over the body. The best way to prevent it is by getting the chickenpox vaccine, which is given twice: once between 10 and 15 months old, and once between 4 and 6 years old. Even vaccinated children might get a mild form of chickenpox.

In Ayurveda, chickenpox is called laghu masurika and is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the body’s three doshas. Treatments include Panchakarma therapy, such as vamana (induced vomiting), and applying herbal pastes to the skin. Herbs like neem, mulethi, guduchi, turmeric, and Indian madder are used to purify the blood and clear the infection. Keeping the sick person isolated, maintaining cleanliness, and using sterile items help with recovery and prevent the spread of chickenpox.

  What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is an infection that causes an itchy skin rash with blisters. It is caused by a virus called varicella-zoster. Chickenpox spreads easily from person to person. However, it is less common now because there is a vaccine that protects against it. Children are more likely to get chickenpox, but adults can get it too.

Before the chickenpox vaccine became available in 1995, almost everyone got chickenpox when they were young. Since the late 1990s, the number of chickenpox cases has dropped by nearly 90%. Today, most children get the chickenpox vaccine as part of their regular shots.

Once you’ve had chickenpox, you can’t get it again from someone else. If you haven’t been vaccinated, you can get chickenpox at any age. Adults who get chickenpox can become very sick, so it’s better to get it as a child or avoid it by getting the vaccine.

Chickenpox has three stages:

1.         Stage 1: Red and bumpy rash that lasts a few days.

2.         Stage 2: Blisters filled with fluid that break open after one to two days.

3.         Stage 3: Blisters form scabs, which also lasts a few days.

Symptoms of Chickenpox

Even though the rash has these stages, you can have all types of bumps at the same time. Some bumps may be forming while others are breaking open. The whole rash can last up to about 10 days.

Chickenpox symptoms are easy to spot. Doctors can often tell just by looking at your child’s skin. The symptoms usually appear in this order:

1.         Low fever.

2.         Feeling tired.

3.         Headache.

4.         Stomachache with no appetite.

5.         Itchy skin rash with many small blisters.

6.         Blisters filled with milky liquid.

7.         Scabs after the blisters break.

8.         Blotchy skin.

9.         Crusty spots that eventually fade away.

Children who get the chickenpox vaccine are usually protected, but not always. If they do get chickenpox, it is usually very mild.

Causes of Chickenpox

A virus causes chickenpox. It spreads from person to person through bodily fluids (like coughing or sneezing) or by touching the rash of an infected person.

How Chickenpox Spreads?

Children can catch chickenpox at any age. After being exposed, they might not feel sick for 1 to 3 weeks. They can spread the virus from 1 to 2 days before any symptoms show until all the blisters have scabbed over.

Chickenpox spreads through:

  1. Touching someone with chickenpox
  2. Breathing in air from an infected person who sneezes or coughs
  3. Contact with fluids from an infected person’s eyes, nose, or mouth

Prevention of Chickenpox

For children under 13:

  1. They should get the first dose of the chickenpox vaccine between 12 and 15 months old.
  2. They should get the second dose between 4 and 6 years old.
  3. Most children get this vaccine combined with vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMRV), but it can also be given alone.

For adults who haven’t had chickenpox:

•           If you are 13 or older and haven’t had the vaccine, you should get two doses, at least 28 days apart.

The chickenpox vaccine is over 90% effective. Since 1995, it has prevented at least 91 million cases of chickenpox.

13.       Ginger Bath: Ginger, with its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, reduces inflammation and itching caused by chickenpox. Add ginger powder to bath water and soak daily for best results.

14.       Green Peas Paste: Green peas paste, when applied generously on rashes, soothes the skin and promotes healing. Apply the paste once a day and take a lukewarm bath afterward.

15.       Don’t Scratch: It can make things worse and slow down healing. It can also leave scars and increase the chance of getting another infection.

16.       Wear Gloves: If you can’t stop scratching, wearing gloves might help, especially at night. Keeping nails short can also prevent scratching.

17.       Cool Compresses: Putting a cold, wet cloth on itchy areas can help. Leave it there for a while to feel better and resist scratching.

18.       Cool Baths: Taking baths in cool water can soothe itching. You can add things like baking soda or oatmeal to make it even more helpful.

19.       Calamine Lotion: This can reduce itching, but be careful not to get it in your eyes.

20.       Eat Soft Foods: Chickenpox sores in the mouth can make eating hard. Stick to foods that aren’t too hot, easy to eat, and won’t hurt your mouth.

21.       Antihistamines: These can help with itching if other treatments don’t work. But ask your doctor first, especially for children.

22.       Pain Reliever: Acetaminophen (like Tylenol) can help with fever and pain. But don’t take aspirin or other NSAIDs without talking to your doctor first, as it can be dangerous.
