In the midst of the global health challenges posed by Dengue fever, exploring alternative remedies becomes imperative. This blog delves into the realm of Ayurvedic medicine, offering insights into its holistic approach towards combating Dengue. Rooted in ancient wisdom and natural remedies, Ayurveda provides a unique perspective on managing Dengue symptoms, bolstering the immune system, and promoting overall well-being. Through a blend of traditional herbs, therapies, and lifestyle recommendations, this blog aims to shed light on Ayurveda’s potential as a complementary approach in the fight against Dengue fever.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a sickness spread by mosquitoes. It happens in warm places around the world. If you get mild dengue fever, you might have a high fever and feel like you have the flu. But severe dengue fever, called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can be very dangerous. It can make you bleed a lot, cause your blood pressure to suddenly drop, and even lead to death.
Lots of people get dengue fever every year. It’s mostly in places like Southeast Asia, the Pacific islands, Latin America, and Africa. But it’s also starting to show up in new areas, like parts of Europe and the southern United States.
Scientists are trying to make vaccines to prevent dengue fever, but they’re not ready yet. Right now, the best way to avoid getting sick is to stop mosquitoes from biting you and to reduce how many mosquitoes are around.
Cause of Dengue Fever
Some people with dengue fever don’t feel sick at all.
But if you do get symptoms, they might seem like the flu and show up about 4 to 10 days after a mosquito bites you.
Symptoms of dengue fever are:
1. High fever
2. Headache
3. Body pain
4. Feeling sick to your stomach
5. Throwing up
6. Pain behind your eyes
7. Swollen glands
8. A rash
Most people get better in about a week. But in some cases, it can get really serious and even life-threatening. This is called severe dengue.
Severe dengue makes your blood vessels leaky and lowers the number of platelets in your blood, which can cause:
1. Shock
2. Internal bleeding
3. Organ failure
4. Death
Warning signs of severe dengue happen fast, usually right after the fever goes away. They include:
1. Strong stomach pain
2. Throwing up a lot
3. Bleeding from gums or nose
4. Blood in pee, poop, or throw up
5. Bruises under the skin
6. Hard or fast breathing
7. Feeling really tired
8. Feeling very irritable or restless
Causes of Dengue fever
Dengue fever happens when you get infected by one of four kinds of viruses spread by mosquitoes. You can’t catch it from another person. When a mosquito carrying the virus bites someone, it can then pass the virus to another person when it bites them.
Once you’ve had dengue fever and recovered, you’re protected from that type of virus, but not the other three. This means you could get sick again if bitten by a mosquito carrying a different type of virus. If you get dengue fever more than once, the risk of it being severe increases.
Some things make you more likely to get dengue fever or have worse symptoms:
1. Living in or visiting tropical areas where the virus is common, like parts of Southeast Asia, the western Pacific islands, Latin America, and Africa.
2. Having had dengue fever before, which makes it more likely to have severe symptoms if you get it again.

Prevention of Dengue fever
Preventing Dengue Fever with Vaccine
In regions where dengue fever is widespread, a vaccine named Dengvaxia is available for individuals aged 9 to 45 who have previously contracted the illness. Administered in three doses over a year, Dengvaxia is only recommended for those with a confirmed history of dengue or positive blood test results indicating prior infection. Notably, individuals without prior exposure to dengue may face an increased risk of severe symptoms and hospitalization if vaccinated. While Dengvaxia isn’t accessible for travelers or mainland U.S. residents, it’s authorized for use in American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands among those aged 9 to 16 who have had dengue previously.
Preventing Mosquito Bites
Despite the availability of the Dengvaxia vaccine, the primary approach to dengue prevention remains controlling mosquito populations and avoiding mosquito bites. The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of measures such as staying in screened or air-conditioned accommodations, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and wearing protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts and pants. Additionally, the use of mosquito repellents containing DEET and products with permethrin to treat clothing and bed nets is recommended. To reduce mosquito breeding grounds, it’s essential to eliminate standing water sources like discarded tires and regularly clean out containers that collect water. These preventive measures play a crucial role in curbing the spread of dengue fever in affected areas.
In conclusion, Ayurvedic medicine presents a promising avenue for managing Dengue fever, offering a holistic approach that targets not just the symptoms but also the underlying imbalances within the body. Through a combination of herbs, dietary recommendations, lifestyle modifications, and detoxification therapies, Ayurveda aims to bolster the immune system, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being. While scientific research on the efficacy of Ayurvedic treatments for Dengue fever is still evolving, anecdotal evidence and centuries-old wisdom suggest that integrating Ayurveda into conventional medical care may provide additional support and relief for Dengue patients. However, it’s crucial to approach Ayurvedic treatments with caution, consulting qualified practitioners and incorporating them as complementary to, rather than a substitute for, conventional Dengue management protocols
