Ayurvedic medicine for bronchitis encompasses various herbal remedies aimed at alleviating symptoms and promoting respiratory health. These treatments often include herbal formulations containing ingredients like turmeric, ginger, tulsi, and licorice, known for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Additionally, Ayurvedic practices such as steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil or herbal teas infused with soothing herbs can help ease congestion and improve breathing. Integrating these natural remedies into one’s routine can provide relief from bronchitis symptoms while supporting overall respiratory wellness.
Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that believes in treating the root cause of a problem. For example, in Ayurveda, bronchitis, which is an infection of the windpipe, is called ‘kasa roga’. According to Ayurveda, bronchitis happens mainly because of problems in digestion. That’s why Ayurveda treats bronchitis using medicines that help both the lungs and the digestive system. Chronic bronchitis can also be caused by things in the air like cigarette smoke and pollution.
The main symptom of bronchitis is long-lasting inflammation of the tubes that carry air to the lungs. This infection makes your body produce a lot of mucus. Other symptoms include chest pain, coughing a lot, having a fever, problems with digestion and appetite, and feeling out of breath. Children, older people, and those with weak immune systems are more likely to get bronchitis. If bronchitis is not treated for a long time, it can turn into tuberculosis. It can also lead to another disease called bronchial asthma.
What is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is when the tubes that bring air to your lungs get swollen and irritated. This can make you cough up thick mucus that might look different from usual. There are two types: acute, which usually comes from a cold and goes away in about a week or so, and chronic, which sticks around longer and can be caused by things like smoking. If you keep getting bronchitis, especially the chronic kind, you should see a doctor. Chronic bronchitis is part of a bigger health problem called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Ayurvedic Perspective of Bronchitis
In Ayurveda, bronchitis is called “Shwasa Pranali Shotha.” It happens when there’s too much Kapha in the respiratory system, especially in the bronchial tubes, causing inflammation. This leads to symptoms like coughing, congestion, and difficulty breathing. Ayurvedic treatments focus on calming the Kapha imbalance, clearing congestion, and bringing back balance to the respiratory system using natural remedies, diet changes, and lifestyle habits. Using natural Ayurvedic plants can be a good way to help heal the lungs and improve breathing.
In Ayurveda, the term for difficulty in breathing is “Shwas Roga.” Ayurveda categorizes specific breathing problems into five types, one of which resembles bronchial asthma. Bronchial asthma involves the obstruction of airways due to imbalanced Vata and Kapha, resulting in acute breathlessness. According to Ayurveda, consuming incompatible foods or being exposed to toxins can lead to this imbalance, causing bronchial issues. Essentially, Ayurveda views bronchial asthma as a disruption in the body’s natural balance, primarily involving the elements of air (Vata) and earth/water (Kapha). This imbalance disrupts the normal functioning of the respiratory system, leading to symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Ayurvedic treatment aims to restore balance in the body through dietary adjustments, lifestyle modifications, herbal remedies, and detoxification practices, thereby addressing the root cause of the breathing difficulty and promoting overall well-being.
Type of Bronchitis
Bronchitis can be either long-lasting (chronic) or short-lasting (acute).
1. Chronic Bronchitis:
Chronic Bronchitis is a severe form of the illness that lasts a long time and can come back even after treatment. It causes ongoing inflammation and irritation in the tubes in your lungs called bronchial tubes. Smoking is often the cause of chronic bronchitis.
2. Acute Bronchitis:
Acute Bronchitis usually happens after you have a cold or cough. Some people call it a chest cold. Acute Bronchitis can be treated in a short time, usually within a week or ten days, but the cough may last longer.
Symptoms of Bronchitis
When you have bronchitis, you might experience:
1. Coughing
2. Making mucus (also called sputum), which can be clear, white, yellowish-gray, or green. Sometimes, it might have a bit of blood in it.
3. Feeling tired
4. Finding it hard to breathe
5. Having a slight fever and feeling cold
6. Feeling discomfort in your chest
For Acute Bronchitis:
1. You might also have cold symptoms, like a mild headache or body aches.
2. These symptoms usually get better in about a week, but you might still have a cough that sticks around for a few more weeks.
Chronic Bronchitis:
1. This means having a cough that makes mucus for at least three months, and it keeps happening for at least two years.
2. With chronic bronchitis, there might be times when your cough or other symptoms get worse. During these times, you might also get an acute infection along with the chronic bronchitis.
Cause of Bronchitis
Bronchitis is often caused by viruses. But things that irritate your airways can also lead to it. These can be infectious or noninfectious causes. Viruses like the flu, RSV, adenovirus, common cold virus, and coronavirus can cause bronchitis. Bacteria like Bordetella pertussis, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and Chlamydia pneumonia can also lead to it. Pollution and smoking cigarettes or marijuana can also irritate your airways and cause bronchitis.

Natural Ayurvedic Remedies for Bronchitis:
The lungs are important organs in our body that help us breathe. They are like spongy bags located in our chest. When we eat healthy food and exercise regularly, our lungs work well. But sometimes, they can get sick, and one common sickness is bronchitis.
Bronchitis happens when the tubes in our lungs become swollen and inflamed. These tubes help air move in and out of our lungs. When we have bronchitis, we might have a lot of mucus in our throat, a stuffy nose, and cough a lot. This can make us feel tired and achy. In Ayurveda, bronchitis is called “Tamaka Shwasa,” which means the lungs have inflammation and blockages. One symptom is a cough caused by problems with the body’s balance of certain things. Along with breathing problems, bronchitis can also make us feel tired, have trouble digesting food, feel sick to our stomach, and have constant headaches.
Bronchitis is when the tubes in your lungs get swollen and irritated. Here are some natural ways to feel better:
Spogel Seeds (Psyllium):
Psyllium, also known as Spogel seeds, helps with constipation, which can worsen breathing issues in bronchitis. It’s a natural way to regulate bowel movements, aiding in overall comfort during bronchitis episodes.
Ginger and Honey:
Mixing fresh ginger juice with honey provides relief from bronchitis symptoms when taken twice daily. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties combined with honey’s soothing effects help alleviate the frequency and severity of bronchial problems.
Mustard Oil and Camphor:
Applying a mixture of warm mustard oil and camphor on the chest, neck, and back can ease bronchitis discomfort. Mustard oil’s warmth combined with camphor’s soothing properties offers relief without massaging to avoid skin irritation.
Using Steam:
Inhaling steam from hot water, possibly with added eucalyptus oil, helps loosen mucus in the lungs, easing breathing difficulties associated with bronchitis. It’s a natural way to clear airways and improve respiratory function.
Ginger and Black Pepper:
Boiling ginger powder and black pepper in water, then adding honey, creates a soothing drink that reduces bronchitis symptoms when consumed twice daily. Ginger and black pepper’s combined benefits provide relief from inflammation and congestion.
Turmeric and Milk:
Boiling turmeric powder in milk and drinking it multiple times a day helps alleviate bronchitis symptoms. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties combined with milk’s soothing effects provide relief from respiratory discomfort.
Sesame Seeds:
Mixing sesame seed powder with water and consuming it twice daily aids in bronchitis relief. Sesame seeds’ medicinal properties help alleviate chest congestion and respiratory discomfort associated with bronchitis.
Tomato Soup:
Consuming tomato soup, rich in vitamin C, twice daily reduces mucus production during bronchitis, easing coughing and respiratory discomfort.

Epsom Salt:
Soaking in a bath with Epsom salt helps relieve bronchitis symptoms, especially during acute episodes. Epsom salt’s properties soothe the body and promote relaxation, easing respiratory distress.
Salt Water Gargle:
Gargling with warm salt water several times a day soothes throat inflammation and helps break up mucus, providing relief from bronchitis symptoms. It’s important to gargle with the right concentration of salt to avoid throat irritation.
Prevention Tips for Bronchitis
To avoid getting bronchitis, try these tips:
1. Stay away from cigarette smoke.
Smoking makes you more likely to get chronic bronchitis.
2. Get vaccinated.
Many cases of short-term bronchitis happen because of the flu, which is a virus. Getting a flu shot every year can help keep you from getting sick. You might also think about getting a vaccine that protects against certain kinds of pneumonia.
3. Wash your hands.
To lower your chances of catching a virus, wash your hands often and use hand sanitizers with alcohol.
4. Wear a mask.
If you have COPD, wearing a mask at work if you’re around dust or fumes, and in crowded places like when you’re traveling, can help protect your lungs.
Ayurvedic Treatments for Bronchitis
Ayurvedic treatments for chronic cough or bronchitis include Panchkarma detox. Panchkarma combines five different treatments to cleanse the body. Since bronchitis is often caused by imbalances in the body, this treatment can help relieve pain and improve breathing.
Panchkarma
There are different types of Panchkarma detox therapies depending on the specific cause of the respiratory disorder. These therapies should only be recommended and supervised by a qualified Ayurvedic doctor.
Vamana (vomiting):
This therapy helps to remove excess mucus in the respiratory tract, which is a result of imbalances in the body’s kapha dosha.
Virechana (purgation):
This therapy helps to cleanse toxins from the gall bladder and liver through medicated purgation.
Vasti (Herbal Enema):
Herbal enema therapy involves introducing a medicated substance like oil, milk, or herbal decoction into the rectum to eliminate toxins through feces.
Nasyam (Herbal nasal drops):
In this therapy, herbal juice or medicated oil is administered through the nose. This helps remove excessive doshas accumulated in the throat and sinuses, providing relief from respiratory problems.
Lifestyle Tips for Bronchitis
Good Sleep:
Getting enough quality sleep is crucial for a healthy immune system and allows your body to recover from daily activities. Aim for around 7-9 hours of sleep each night to feel refreshed and energized.
Avoid Smoking:
Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke can harm your lungs and weaken your immune system. Stay away from smoking and places where people smoke to protect your respiratory health.
Wear a Face Mask:
When going outdoors, especially in areas with high pollution levels, wearing a face mask can help filter out harmful particles and protect your lungs from damage.
Eat Healthy:
Consuming a balanced and nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins boosts your immune system and helps your body fight off infections and illnesses.
Exercise and Yoga:
Regular physical activity, including exercises and yoga poses, improves lung function, enhances muscle strength, and increases oxygen intake, benefiting overall respiratory health. Poses like Camel Pose, Cobra Pose, Wheel Pose, and Upward Facing Dog Pose specifically aid in managing respiratory conditions like bronchitis by promoting better breathing and lung capacity.
